Chronograph Functions

- The main types of chronograph explained by their dials

The links on this page explain how to read and use a chronograph watch by means of explaining the functions on the dial.  The majority of the links are for different types of chronographs and what their practical uses are.  There is also a section showing the three main types of mechanism, and a section on how to operate the chronograph based on what type of mechanism it is.

The links are replicated from a booklet that was originally published in 1951 by the Swiss Federation of Watch Manufacturers.  Some of the functions therefore may be a  bit out of date, such are recording telephone times.  In the past callers were billed at 3 or 5 minute intervals, which is what a chronograph could be used for - today they bill you by the second.  If you have any comments or additions please e-mail me, neil@chronomaster.co.uk
