Pristine condition vintage Eternamatic 9 karat gold automatic wristwatch which was recently serviced. Eterna have been producing high quality watches since their formation in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland.  They have been responsible for many horological innovations including the 1948 production of the world’s first automatic wristwatch on a ball bearing mounted rotor – a huge technological achievement of the era, and the Eterna logo still today bears, the five ball bearings.  Then, there was the world’s very first alarm wristwatch, the smallest self-winding movement, the thinnest quartz wristwatch of all times with a mere 0.98 mm, the smallest quartz movement for ladies’ watches, and on and on.  For connoisseurs of Swiss quality timepieces, all these accomplishments transformed the name Eterna into a genuine legend.  The watch dates to 1972. It is a presentation watch and as such in pristine condition. Presentation watches were often treasured and rarely worn due to their sentimentality, this one is no exception and it has seen very little wrist time. The case is swolid 9 karat gold and has a decent weitght to it. It appears to have never been polished as the edges are sharp. Unusually it has got a screw on case back. Thi si sopposed to the regular snap on backs on gold watches of this era. The screw case back gives it more depth, thisckness, and of course more gold content. There is approximately £100 worth of scrap gold in the case. The watch is a simple and understated design, has a pearl white dial, gold hands and batons.  The dial case and hands are all in mint condition.  The movement is an automatic Brevet 21 jeweled caliber 1414UD.  The movement is signed with the Words Eterna-Matic and is in outstanding condition.  Keeping accurate time.  It has got the original signed crown with the ball bearing logo. The case back is stamped with the presentation insignia “ICL Majority Club 21 years Service. S. Dandy 6.5.72.  Dimensions are: width 34 mm excluding crown, 35 mm including crown, lug to lug 40 mm, thickness 11.5 mm. Ref. ETE 29. Price is £345 or US $475

Eterna Pininfarina automatic chronograph. Eterna were the manufacturers who were chosen by Porsche Design to manufacture Porsche Design watches. Latterly Eterna were bought by Porsche Design and now operate under the Porsche Design group of companies. The Porsche family, set itself new challenges. With the motto “Form Follows Function”, its engineers and watchmakers focussed on the successful transfer to watch making of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s creative concepts. In the same year of the acquisition by Porsche Design, two great names, Pininfarina and Eterna, came together for a line of watches. The new Pininfarina models from Eterna are the result of many years of striving to produce wristwatches that are far more than pure time-measuring instruments. Eterna developed the ETA line of movements, subsequently sold to the Swatch Group and have been responsible for many innovations in watch making such as the ball bearing rotor, as depicted in Eterna’s logo. Pininfarina has a history dating back to 1930, and are now one of the major suppliers of design, product and process engineeringand manufacturing of niche vehicles on the automotive scene.  Backed by the experience, creativity and innovation that have always been the main hallmarks of its business. This watch embodies Eterna’s watch making skills and encompasses Pininfarina’s design concepts. Like the Porsche Design philosophy where form follows function, that principle is adhered to in this watch. The case is brushed solid stainless steel and is a thick and chunky, but dimensions are not too big. It has got a twelve hour rotating bezel and a sapphire crystal. The dial is a patterned or hobnail dial which is in blue. The blue colour is hard to pick out in the photographs, where it looks more like charcoal, but it is distinctly blue in colour. The dial bears the Pininfarina logo as well as the Eterna logo. The hands and indices are bold and highly legible. There is a date at the 3 position. The movement is the Swiss made 25 jewel Valjoux 7750. Attractive and stylish looking watch with unmistakably superior design branding. Comes with boxes and papers with unsigned warranty card. The dimensions are 35 mm excluding crown, 37 mm including crown and 39.5 mm lug to lug and thickness is 12 mm. Ref: ETE 27. Price is £895 or US $1,595

Mint condition Eterna 1948 automatic wristwatch which is a certified chronometer. The world of mechanical timepieces experienced a revolution in 1948. Eterna, one of the most eminent manufactures, had introduced a paradigm change based on five tiny spheres. They thoroughly and permanently eliminated the greatest shortcoming of self-winding movements: the friction-prone rotor bearing. It was only natural that this ground-breaking invention embodied in the Eterna·Matic would advance to become the global standard once the patents expired. But even then, Eterna had much more to offer: an ingenious system for polarising the motion of the rotor as well as a sophisticated gear train which significantly boosted the efficiency of the winding system. These inventions, too, are still very much up-to-date. Moreover, precision, quality, dependability and ease of service have always been at the core of the Eterna philosophy. As a salute to this pioneering spirit and in commemoration of the future of the automatic era, the Eterna·Matic 1948 will always rank prominently in our collections – with its authentic case and the transparent back which reveals the brilliance of the timeless movement with all the details that turned the original Eterna·Matic into a legend .  The movement is an ETA calibre 2824-2 chronometer, 11 ½ lines. Self-winding mechanical design with ball-bearing-mounted rotor replicating the original; rhodium-plated, decorated by hand, blued steel screws, Incabloc shock absorber, Nivarox 1 balance spring, beryllium balance wheel. 25 jewels. 38-hour power reserve. Frequency: 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Centre seconds hand. The case is a faithful reproduction of the first Eterna·Matic dating from 1948. Polished stainless steel. Has a cambered, anti-reflection-coated and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Transparent sapphire case back. Water-resistant to 30 metres, and a date window at 3 o’clock. Numbered, with Chronometer certificate.  Comes with box, guarantee book, instructions and all chronometer certification papers.  UK List price is £1,425 or US $2,650. Dimensions are: width 36 mm excluding crown, 39 mm including crown, lug to lug 44 mm, thickness 9 mm. Ref: ETE 06.sold
