Ebel 1911 Discovery  Automatic Chronometer

Ebel 1911 Discovery automatic chronometer. It comes complete with box and papers and was originally purchased in 2009. On July 15th 1911,Eugne Blum and Alice Levy applied to register the Ebel brand for watches with the chamber of commerce in the watch making capital, La Chaux de Fonds. In 1912 EBEL brought out its first wristwatches. In 1914 Ebel won a gold medal at the Swiss National Exhibition for patented ring watches with pallet escapement and hidden time setting. From then on, other brands ordered complete watches from EBEL for resale under their own name. This became the company main activity during the following decades. In 1925 Grand Prix Commemorative Diploma at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industry in Paris, for making High Jewelry Art Deco wristwatches in platinum, onyx, diamonds and emeralds. In 1929  Charles-Eugne, the son of Eugne Blum and Alice Levy joined the family firm in October. Together with the watchmaker Marcel Reuche, he introduced infallible production control systems, which guaranteed irreproachable quality. The brand attracted demanding new clients, such as the Vacheron & Constantin brand Astral. Under the name Paul Breguette, Ebel created wristwatches especially for the American market. In 1935 Ebel won the Diploma at the Brussels Uiversal Exhibition. Ebel was the first watch company to set up the "Western Electric" precision evaluation system. From 1939 to 1945 Ebel went into watch production for the British Royal Air Force, watches which are now highly sought after and collectible due to their rarity. This watch is the 1911 Discovery automatic chronograph. It is in excellent condition. It is a large and substantially built sporty looking watch which is finely crafted with an automatic movement. The case is matte and polished stainless steel with grooved crown, sapphire crystal. The movement is a 23 jewel Ebel Cal. 240 automatic, self-winding mechanical movement. It is water resistant to 100 metres and is an altogether handsome, sporty looking and durable watch, yet would not look out of place being worn with a suit or for more casual occasions. It comes on the original rubber strap with folding clasp. It comes with all boxes and papers. The watch has a UK retail price of £3,900. Dimensions are as follows: Width is 44 mm excluding crown, 47 mm including crown, lug to lug is 50 mm and thickness is 14 mm.
