The Regulator clock was originated in the 18th century by Louis Berthould.  He devised the regulator dial.  His idea was that the minute hand should be very dominant, with hours and seconds rotating within separate dials integrated into the watch face.  For the very first time this arrangement made the minute hand stand out at all times.  At the time it was a groundbreaking invention, but one which also took account of an emerging trend: people were becoming increasingly interested in measuring the smallest unites of time.  They sensed a growing urge to keep a precise, uniform track of time wherever they happened to be.  This assisted from industry, trade, communications, science, navigation as well as everyday schedules such as keeping to correct timetables for transportation.  The new dial was incorporated in pendulum clocks called regulators.  The regulator clocks became very precise and were used for determining official standards until the 1960’s when they were replaced by millisecond accurate atomic clocks.  Today the precision and aesthetics of a mechanical watch hold an enduring fascination for us.  The ageless principle of its working mechanism finds a congenial sequel in the 6100 Regulateur series created by Sinn.  An updated version of the pendulums that featured in the historic regulators still oscillate in these watches.  Round pendulums consisting of screws and a balance wheel in this model, ensure the steady precise progression of the hour, minute and second hands.  It is also no accident that the traditional image of the Regulateur with its single hand is geared to the minute as the central measure of time.  The dial is guilloched, the appliqués contrasting with the background and the stylish finely drawn numerals convincingly emulate historic templates.  The Sinn Regulateur reflects the company’s self conception and corporate philosophy down to the last detail, and it is the perfect compliment to the company’s line of classical masterpieces. Rather than the classic looking regulator, with the Reglateur Technik, Sinn have stamped on it their own identity.  This being one of functional, and utility watches inspired by military and aviation watches.  The design of this retulator watch is certainly military and aviation inspired and is very visibly a Sinn. It has a scratch resistant sapphire front and back showing off the modified, but traditional and well established Unitas 6498 movement.  The movement is modified by Sinn, known as the SZ-04 and in doing so, Sinn have created a conclusive chronometer style regulator.  The movement has a Glucydur screw balance, a Triovis fine adjustment system, a Nivarox 1 spring balance and elaborate movement with Geneva stripes, diamond cut bridges and blued screws – all visible through the sapphire display back.  In the box, there is a collapsible eye loupe allowing the owner of the watch to admire the movement in close detail.  The movement is 17 jewels and is hand wound.  The balance wheel oscillates at 18,000 semi oscillations per hour.  It is anti magnetic to DIN 8309 specification and shock proof to DIN 8308 specification.  The case is stainless steel to DIN WNR 1,4435.  It is polished and satinised.  The crown is a D3 crown with double O ring gasket and no screws.  It is water resistant to 10 bars which is approximately 100 metres.  It has stop seconds for accurate time setting. Dimensions are as follows.  Width is 44 mm excluding the crown, 48 mm including the crown, thickness is 12 mm, lug to lug is 50 mm and the lug width is 22 mm.  Ref. SIN 65.  Price is £1,445

Absolutely beautiful Sinn 103 hand wound chronograph with spectacular good looks, a first rate movement and pedigree to suit.  The hand wound 103 is limited to only 300 pieces. The Sinn Flieger 103 is one of Sinn’s most successful watches.  It is one of the models which has shaped the reputation of the Sinn and has become an ambassador of the company.  The 103 has been in production for nearly ten years now.  The 103 hand wound is aimed to please the connoisseurs, enthusiasts and collectors since a new model hand wound watch is seldom seen in modern watch making.  The movement is a modified Valjoux 7750, and referred to as a Valjoux–ETA 7760.  The automatic winding rotor has been removed and replaced with a hand winding mechanism.  This has been done to satisfy the enthusiasts of classical and original timepieces who appreciate the aesthetics and the daily interaction with the hand winding mechanism.  The hand winding ritual each day is an interaction that creates a bond between man and machine.  It is something that becomes very personal to the wristwatch enthusiast as it represents a return to traditional values, which are so often disrespected and forgotten in today’s high tech and computer age.  Not only does this watch offer a traditional hand wound mechanism, it also appeals to the collector as the movement is decorated with a complex pearl cross section and Geneva stripe finish.  The components are rhodium plated with blued screws and has a Sinn engraved bridge.  The front of the watch has a domed sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating.  The dial is mat black with white sub dials and luminous hands and baton style dial markings . The watch also has the characteristic pilots rotating bezel, which is a non ratchet friction type.  The bezel, is a high grade steel with an anodized aluminum bezel insert. Sinn Einsatzzeitmesser 4 (EZM 4). Another totally unique and very appealing Sinn EZM 4 automatic chronograph wristwatch, this time designed built for fire fighters and paramedics.  The watch continues along the EZM functionality, legibility and practical lines.  To start it also has the crown and the pushers over on the left side of the watch.  This prevents the watch form snagging whilst it is being worn in potentially life threatening situations.  This layout is also popular with left handed people or people who like to wear a watch on the right wrist.  The watch itself is functional as it contains a pulsometer on the outer scale.  This is used by paramedics or fire fighters to check the pulse rates of casualties, and they can tell at a glance the pulse rate without having to make any additional calculations, which is useful given that the situations in which this is done is one of an emergency.  It has a one hour chronograph, additional hours are not required for fire fighting, so these functions are not used to allow the watch greater legibility and clarity.  The chronograph one hour hand is the centre hand with the T bar.  The scale on the chronograph is a count up scale from 0 to 60, with the first fifteen minutes marked out in yellow/green, and the second fifteen minutes in red.  This provides instant and highly visual reading (as may often be read in restricted light environments) of critical timing in emergency situations such as relating to oxygen remaining, time in a building etc.  The sixty second chronograph hand is also a central sweeping hand and can be used on the same coloured count up scale for paramedic purposes. Day and date functions at the 9 position – out of the way of the critical 30 minute timing functions Altogether cleverly thought out and designed watch.  It is functional, practical and unusual unique watch.  Width is 40 mm at excluding crown and 44 mm including crown, lug to lug is 47 mm, Thickness is 14 mm. Outstanding design and very successful model, the 142 automatic chronograph is a watch amongst watches.  Incorporating the highly functional and technical Lemania 5100 movement, this watch is a real work horse.  It is reputedly the first automatic chronograph worn in space by Reinhard Furrer on the 1985 Spacelab D1 mission.  The design is outstanding and has been around for a number of years, ignoring the fashion trends of the 80's and 90's, the watch has remained a constant and won a great deal of respect by sticking to the initial design principles, not least to mention it's durability, reliability and functionality.  This one is titanium, and shown here with the argon fill option and water absorbing capsule, both used as moisture repellants to ensure the cleanest of atmospheric conditions within the machine.  Width is 41 mm excluding crown and 43 mm including crown Lug to lug is 44 mm, Thickness is 17 mm.  Ref SIN 08c sold out
