Roy king was a leading British watch designer and jeweller, with customers ranging from Saudi princes to The Beatles and Tom Jones. Roy King began his career at the age of 14 as an apprentice goldsmith and diamond mounter in Hatton Garden. By 21 he was foreman of a workshop, creating one-off pieces which readily found buyers (including members of the Royal Family) through Bond Street jewellers. Much of his work in the 1930s was also as an uncredited manufacturer for names such as Rolex, Cartier, Asprey and Garrard. After the war, King began to design and make watches under his own name. In 1961, the Roy King workshop swept the board at the British Modern Jewellery Exhibition, winning two first prizes, as well as one second and one third prize. The winning pieces are now in the permanent collection of Goldsmiths' Hall. During the 1960s, the workshop produced many designs using a variety of unconventional methods to satisfy the most avant garde tastes. King's "bark finish" design for bracelets sparked a craze: when George Harrison married Patti Boyd in 1966, she wore one of King's bark finish wedding bands. This one is made circa 1974 when he started making watches in sterling silver. It is a solid watch with a good heavy and solid case made from 925 solid sterling silver which is then gold plated. It is heavy in weight and the watch weighs a total of 44 grams. It is in an attractive retro style with elongated and tiered case with white dial and Roman numerals. It is a hand wound Swiss made movement and acrylic crystal. The crown is original to the watch and signed Roy King. It comes on a crocodile leather strap and has the large and original buckle also very heavy and also made from gold plated solid sterling silver and is stamped as such. The case back is solid and contains the silver hallmarks. Unusual and collectible English wristwatch.  Dimensions are: width 23 mm excluding crown, 24 mm including both crowns, lug to lug 38 mm, thickness 8 mm Ref. VIN 444. Price is £445 or US $895

New old stock and mint and new looking Roamer Stingray hand wound chronograph Roamer began life in 1888 when a watchmaker named Fritz Meyer opened his own workshop to produce cylinder escapements in Switzerland. Fifteen years later, his venture had grown into a fully fledged company manufacturing their own complete movements. By 1923, the company was turning out one million watches a year and in 1932 it had 1,200 employees. In 1940, its inventive engineers had developed and patented an exceptionally astute watertight system. The company continued to prosper and became especially famous for the Anfibio range of water resistant watches which today have become collectors items. The Anfibio watches were famously issued to the to various armies and police forces including the Rhodesian army and the South African police.  They were also very famous for their “Stingray” watches which were originally marketed as entry level, but very hardy and tough watches, which were fun to own, but built with good quality materials and movements.  This one is similar to the Stingray, it is the Stingray and in excellent condition, which is also a strong and durable Roamer watch.  The case is substantial and strong stainless steel with original signed crown and signed case back.  Has attractive dial colour scheme, with mat black dial and red and white accents.  Hand wound Valjoux 7733 movement, all functions operate correctly and keeping time.  Date window at 3 position.  Excellent all round watch on high quality replacement strap.  Purchased as new old stock form Gisbert Joseph, as such comes with letter of authenticity from them. Stainless steel case and the back has the Enicar large Oyster and pearl logo, with an individual serial number. The watch is a classic design with lovely contrasting features. It has a plain bezel making it less busy.  The watch is simple and to the point, with a robust movement – reputedly the same movement, the Valjoux 72 that was put in Rolex Daytona’s.  The button at 2 starts and stops the chronograph and the button at 4 resets the chronograph. The chrono 60 second hand is the sweep hand, the sub register at 3 is the 30 second timer, the 12 hour timer is at 6 and the continuous seconds at 9. B136 Doctor B2.JPG (163154 bytes)

Very unusual and good condition vintage hand wound regulator watch.  Regulators are not common watches and less often seen in vintage watches.  The regulator face is a striking and unusual watch, which is distinctive an unique looking.  The Regulator clock was originated in the 18th century by Louis Berthould.  He devised the regulator dial.  His idea was that the minute hand should be very dominant, with hours and seconds rotating within separate dials integrated into the watch face.  For the very first time this arrangement made the minute hand stand out at all times.  At the time it was a groundbreaking invention, but one which also took account of an emerging trend: people were becoming increasingly interested in measuring the smallest unites of time.  They sensed a growing urge to keep a precise, uniform track of time wherever they happened to be.  This assisted from industry, trade, communications, science, navigation as well as everyday schedules such as keeping to correct timetables for transportation.  The new dial was incorporated in pendulum clocks called regulators.  The regulator clocks became very precise and were used for determining official standards until the 1960’s when they were replaced by millisecond accurate atomic clocks.  The watch itself is hand wound.  It has the red central sweep second hand as the primary visual.  The two sub dials are the hour hand in the top sub dial and the minute hand in the lower sub dial.  The watch is made from stainless steel with an acrylic crystal.  The winding action is perfect, but when setting the time, the crown slips a bit and setting the time is easier turning the hands backwards as there is less slippage. Dimensions are 33 mm excluding the crown, 34 mm including the crown, 40 mm lug to lug and 8 mm thick. Ref VIN 424 Price is £345 or US $695

Harwood are reputedly the inventors of the first automatic wristwatch.  This is a well documented fact.  Due to this as well as the other crown less hand setting innovation, Harwood watches have become cult classics and very desirable amongst watch collectors.  John Harwood was a watchmaker and soldier during the first world war.  During his time he had problems with moisture and dust entering the mechanism through the crown.  His idea of a self winding watch cam to him when observing children on a see saw.  The automatic was later to replace the hand winding mechanism and is similar in its design to the later Omega bumper movement which winds from hammer impact rather than the modern oscillating rotor.  A full history can be seen on the Harwood web site http://www.harwood-watch.com/en/history/content.html  Harwood are still in existence today and are making watches similar to their originals with similar movements and hand setting mechanism to the originals.  Apart from the hammer impact automatic winding, the hands are set by rotating the coin edge bezel.  The bezel is turned to engage the hands.  There is an indicator in an aperture in the dial which is silver when the hands are in setting mode.  When the desired time is set, the bezel is rotated a bit a bit more so the aperture turns red, meaning the hands are disengaged when the time is set and the watch can be worn.  Given it’s age, the watch is in excellent condition, some fading to the dial which can be expected as it is nearly 50 years old.  It was serviced 1 month ago and is in excellent working order and the movement is likewise in excellent condition.  Dimensions are Width is 30 mm excluding crown, lug to lug is 31 mm and thickness is 11 mm VIN 434 sold

The eighth-generation descendants of Henry Favre took over the business in 1970. Under the leadership of Henry Favre, born in 1908, the factory distinguished itself with a number of innovations launched from around 1950, including, for example, their own automatic caliber in 1956, the "Bivouac", a manually-wound wristwatch with mechanical altimeter in 1963, and the 1966 "Bathy 50" with a mechanical depth gauge. Similarly in the sixties, Favre-Leuba made itself known for its extraordinary twin-barreled movements, initially with manual winding and later with automatic winding. These movements - the caliber FL 1162 with a balance frequency of 36,000v/h - were fitted to the 1968 "Twinmatic" and "Duomatic" models.
