B186 Tegrov 3.jpg (119058 bytes)

Mint condition Tegrov Swiss made hand winding divers wristwatch. Tegrov were a common brand in the 1960’s and 1970’s that competed at the popular end of the markt with nice looking watches, very stylish during the era and a low cost. This one is a hand winding watch dating the the early 1970’s and the styling is typical of this era.It is bold, brash, colourful and a very funky case shape. It is a style that went horribly out of fashion in the 1980’s and 1990’s as modern quartz watches dominated at this end of the market. Now that that craze is over, watches like this tegrov are regarded as many as style icons and very retro cool looking. The case is bold and sturdy looking and very thick, square with rounded edges. It has got a black dial with tritium dial markings to the indices and primary numbers, and red and white 60 second markers. There is a date at the 3 position which is white wheel with red print. There is a red and white chequered pattern towards the 9 position which is off centre and quirky looking but adding a sporty feel to it. It has got a resin bi directional non ratcheted rotating bezel iin black with red to the first twenty minutes and white print. It has got a Swiss made hand winding 17 jewel movement which is working very well and ticking away sweetly. It comes on a period bracelet which is unsigned so possibly not original. It is abeads of rice style bracelet with folding clasp. The case back states that the watch is water resistant, anti magnetic and shock proof. It has a steel case back and the case is chrome plated base metal. Nice all around watch to be enjoyed as originally intended, a funky sporty timepiece on a budget. Dimensions are as follows. Width is 36 mm excluding the crown, 39 mm including the crown, lug to lug is 42 mm and thickness is 13.5 mm. Ref. VIN 562. Price is £135 or US $275

New old stock and recently serviced Caravelle automatic wristwatch made by Bulova. Bulova has a long history and tradition with watchmaking beginning in 1875. Bulova have been responsible for many innovations in wristwatches, the biggest being the development of the Accutron watch, the first fully electric battery operated watch. The Accutron watches are now collectors classics especially the Spaceview which gave the owner of the watch a view of the movement through a glass top case so that the electronic circuitry could be clearly seen. This was a quantum leap forward from the mechanical watches of the day. The Caravelle brand was launched by Bulova in the in the 1960’s. It was designed to introduce a more cost effective wristwatch that was reliable and accurate with fully jeweled Swiss movements that competitively priced alongside non jeweled disposable watches that tended to break after a year or two of use. This proved successful and the fully jewellled watches such as the Caravelle became the order of the day with cheap non jeweled watches eventually being phased out as nobody would buy them if they could get a watch such as a Caravelle for the same price. This one was made in the 1970’s and takes on a styling typical of the early 1970’s. Indeed it does look very familiar to an Omega Dynamic. This was perhaps a deliberate ploy where a customer could get a watch as good as a dynamic at about a third of the price. This was since Caravelle initially designed watches to retail between $10.95 to $29.95. The watch is new old stock meaning that it has been preserved in its original condition, this is usually due to old stock that has been previously unsold and they come to light when retailers move premises and they are found in storage. case is brushed stainless steel with radial pattern and polished case sides. It is a large and chunky watch with a substantial feel to it. The case back is screw on and still has the original wax seal in place that was originally put on watches in this period. The dial is an attractive and period bulls eye type dial with light blue central track against a navy blue dial with red seconds indices and white and silver hour markers. There is a day and date at the 3 position. The winding crown is original and signed with the letter C. The bracelet is a replacement and not original to the watch. The watch is marked as being waterproof but this is not tested. Also it is marked as being anti magnetic and shock resistant. It is a handsome looking and stylish watch very reminiscent of the designs of the early 1970’s and is a collectors classic in outstanding condition. The watch was recently serviced and is in outstanding overall condition inside and out. It comes with the original hang tag indicating Caravelle on one side and the model reference number of 683 01 01 on the rear side of the hang tag. Dimensions are as follows: width is 44 mm excluding the crown, 45 mm including the crown, lug to lug is 40 mm and thickness is 12.5 mm. VIN 554. Price is £175 or US $295

The watch is outstanding value for money. The weight is 12.5 grams and at current gold prices the case is worth £250. The watch is a lovely looking piece. It is a proper vintage and a very early watch dating to the late 1940’s. Despite its age, the watch is running very well and keeping good time. The case is a cushion shape case with fixed bars, and typical of the cases made in this era. The dial is showing some signs of age and faded from silver to a creamy yellow colour and it is showing darker discolouration around the numerals. It has a Swiss made Tissot movement and it is hand winding. The strap is not original but has been left on the watch as it is a an olds looking strap and fitting for the age of the watch, the leather on the strap is in good condition and strong and durable. It also comes in a very old box, but not the original box. This is a watch that is valued not much more above its weight in gold and is a lovely vintage collectible that will retain its value. Dimensions are as follows. Width is 32 mm excluding the crown, 33 mm including the crown, 34 mm lug ot lug and 9 mm thick. Price is £345 or US $575

Excellent condition Swiss Emperor manual winding chronograph. The Swiss Emperor was a small Swiss company now defunct that was more famous for making wrist alarms. They did however come up with some very good quality, robust and durable watches. This one dates from the 1960’s and is in a typical late 1960’s dress style intended for more formal wear with smart clothes or a suit. The case is gold plated in a classical styling with long narrow lugs, square flat ended pushers and flat winding crown. The dial is in lovely condition with minor patina showing up towards the printed area, it is in a pearly silver colour with wonderfully contrasting polished gold baton markings and hands. More famous clients include Omega, Ebel, Longines, Patek Philippe, Zenith and many more. The actual dial and movement on this watch are not signed, but the inside of the case back is signed Staybrite and it has a serial number on the case back which is 320719. Since there is no makers mark on the dial or movement it is sold as a Staybrite. The previous owner bought the watch from Antiquorum in Geneva and paid £1,440 at this auction in 2006. The watch was marketed by Antiquorum, who are specialist watch auctioneers, as a Staybrite. The watch itself is a fine and rare watch manufactured around 1920. It is a mid size stainless steel cased watch with single olive shaped button chronograph, the movement is possibly a Lemania as Lemania were famed for their single button chronographs which they made in their hundreds of thousands. The dial is a white enamel dial in immaculate condition with chronograph register, telemeter and tachometer scales. It has black painted baton indexes and Arabic quarter hour numerals, subsidiary seconds, outer 1/5th second scale, Arabic five second numerals, outermost telemeter graduation in red and inner red tachometer spiral. The hands are blued steel alpha hands. The movement is numbered as a caliber 12 rhodium plated with 15 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance, self compensating flat balance spring and index regulator. The case is a three body which is polished and brushed, flat stepped bezel and concave lugs. Altogether an outstanding condition collectors piece in perfect working condition. B181 Zenith chron 2.jpg (93116 bytes)

B181 Zenith chron 4.jpg (72136 bytes)

B181 Zenith chron 5.jpg (99402 bytes)

Excellent condition Zenith Automatic chronometer in 18 karat gold dating to the early 1950’s. The Chronometer is a rare and sought after watch, which is very difficult to find. Zenith began production in Switzerland in 1865 and are one of the few companies that can call themselves a manufacturer, as they design, manufacture and assemble all components in their own factories.  The watch is made from solid 18 karat gold with a decent weight to it, it has got a screw on case back which has got three sets of initials engraved on the back. These can be polished out if necessary, but it is best kept original The case is classically styled and for the era it is actually quite a large case. The case is well designed and well balanced, with lovely curved angles on the lugs.  The dial and hands are lovely and clean and in mint condition. The movement is the Zenith cal. 133.8 which is one of first Zenith automatic movements (together with cal. 133), and the first movement to have direct central second hand. It is a bumper automatic with 20 jewels, beating at 21.600 bph with a power reserve of 35 h. There were 77.000 watches produced with this caliber between 1951 and 1958. The bumper movements work in kinetic and inertia where the winding rotor moves around with the movement of the wrist. It winds the watch by the rotor impacting the winding mechanism which gives rise to it’s name the “bumper” as the rotor bumps off the winding mechanism to provide its power. The bumping is cushioned by a spring on each side of the rotor. The movement has got a nice solid action to it and it can be felt winding with a good solid impact when worn on the wrist.  The crystal is acrylic. There are some minor marks to the case, not too noticeable, these can be polished out, even a hand polish would remove most marks, but again best left original so it is not over polished.  Today for the equivalent watch from Zenith, prices start at £4,000.  The dimensions are as follows: Width is 36 mm excluding crown and 38 mm including crown, Lug to lug is 41 mm, Thickness is 10 mm. Ref ZEN 70. Price is £1,145 or US $1,895

Fifteen years later, his venture had grown into a fully fledged company manufacturing their own complete movements. By 1923, the company was turning out one million watches a year and in 1932 it had 1,200 employees. In 1940, its inventive engineers had developed and patented an exceptionally astute watertight system. The company continued to prosper and became especially famous for the Anfibio range of water resistant watches which today have become collectors items. The Anfibio watches were famously issued to the to various armies and police forces including the Rhodesian army and the South African police.  They were also very famous for their “Stingray” watches which were originally marketed as entry level, but very hardy and tough watches, which were fun to own, but built with good quality materials and movements. This one is a nice well looked after hand winding wristwatch. It is in all original condition and working well. It has a gold plated case with steel screw on case back, the case back is signed with the Roamer logo and has two tool marks to it. The overall condition of the case is excellent. The dial is a matching champagne colour dial which is a classic layout. It has got black markers and hands so contrasts well with good legibility. It is signed Roamer. The crown is a push crown also signed Roamer. The movement is a Swiss made hand winding 17 jewel movement which is signed Roamer, it also has an internal plastic dust cover protecting the movement . It also unusually comes on what appears to be the original leather strap with the original buckle. The buckle is signed Roamer, but the strap isn’t, however the strap and buckle look correctly sized for each other. Working well. It is in excellent working condition , the case is in excellent condition but there is some damage to the dial to the right side, this is clearly picked out on the pictures, but in real life not very noticeable as the light reflects a lot on the curve of the crystal above the damage, so it is often hidden but the curve and natural reflection. That said a decent dial restorer could get it looking like new at relatively low cost. It is a large and substantial watch, specifically designed for timing sporting events. It is sporty and functional looking with striking good looks. The case is solid stainless steel and it is a large, colourful and sporty looking watch. The dial is marked for sports timing. It has an outer tachometric scale in white print and an inner telemeter scale in red print.  Very striking black central section linking the two sub dials.  The movement is a Valjoux 7733.  It was recently serviced prior to coming into stock. Rotary is still an independent family company, and at present Robert Dreyfuss – the great grandchild of Moise Dreyfuss – is its chairman.  In 1940 Rotary became the official watch supplier for the British Army. Coinciding as this did with the Second World War and the drafting of huge numbers into the army, the move put a Rotary watch in almost every household in Britain, leaving a lasting impression of the brand in the UK. More recently, Rotary Watches was elected as one of the UK's "superbrands" in 2006 and has retained its place in successive years. The “winged wheel” Rotary logo was first introduced in 1925 and has since undergone only minor changes in appearance. In addition to its traditional brand, the company also produces watches under the more exclusive "Dreyfuss & Co" name. This is a classic looking gents quartz wristwatch. B193 Deco 4.jpg (107975 bytes)

B193 Deco 3.jpg (105347 bytes)

B193 deco 2.jpg (121073 bytes)

Excellent condition and very retro very cool and funky looking Deco automatic chronograph with a calibre 15 automatic movement which is the same movement used in many Breitlings, and Heuers. In fact the calibre 15 was a development which was in collaboration between Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton-Buren and Dubois-Depraz who initially introduced the world's first automatic chronograph with the calibre 11. This was further developed to the calibre 12 and eventually this one the calibre 15. It is a handsome and strong watch with practical features, with vintage and very retro case shape. The watch dates to around 1975 and the case and dial styling are very reminiscent and typical of this era. It is a style that went horribly out of fashion in the 1980’s and 1990’s and during this time was regarded as kitsch or tacky where all design sophistication was completely lost. However with a turnaround in styles, these 1970’s designs are now regarded as iconic, leading edge and retro cool. The dial is beautiful and a perfectly balanced combination of timekeeping and chronograph functions, keeping the un necessary clutter to an absolute minimum. The dial however has quite a lot of design detail and the aforementioned styling with large sub dials which have as cross hair pattern and seem to be asymmetric in shape with different shading of blue and white splitting them up. The dial is a two register chronograph, which is unusual to find in an automatic as most automatics have three sub registers. The winding crown is on the left of the case so it does not interfere with the chronograph functions. Date window at 6 position further adding to the dial balance. The sub seconds and chronograph hands are orange and contrast against the white sub dials which are unusually large. Has a blue silver and turquoise dial with contrasting orange hands, very retro cool looking dial with white seconds track and blue tachometric scale making for an altogether very good looking colour scheme. All stainless steel solid and heavy case. It comes on an orange hole punched racing strap as well as a blue leather strap. Width is 40 mm excluding crown and 42 mm including crown, lug to lug is 45 mm, Thickness is 14 mm.  Ref: VIN 568. sold

It has got a frictional directional rotating bezel which is iterated to 60 minutes in an aviation style. Not much information can be found on  Marcel watches, so it was probably one of the multitude of smaller independent Swiss companies that thrived in the first half of the 20th century only to succumb to the quartz invasion that killed off many of the smaller Swiss independent companies. This one is a nice looking hand winding watch in a military style with a cushion case shape very much in the style of the 1970’s CWC and Hamilton watches that were issued to the British military, and it dates to around the late 1960’s. The case is in excellent condition and looks like it has been refinished. The case back is screw on with a skin diver logo. It indicates that it as a stainless steel back and base metal bezel. The rotating bezel is in mint condition and it s a world time bezel in silver and black. The dial indicates that it is 5 ATM tested, but that is not to be trusted nowadays, and is shock resistant. The dial is a nice mat black dial with bold luminous green indices and numbers and large bold luminous filled hands and sweep central second hand. The dial is possibly re-finished as the luminosity is very bright for a watch of this age. There is a date at the 3 position. It comes on a brand new military olive drab nato strap. Dimensions are 38 mm excluding crown, 42 mm including crown and 44 mm lug to lug and 14 mm thick. Ref: VIN 564. sold

Recently serviced and mint condition 1960's Beautiful Enicar automatic winding military style watch which keeps excellent time. Enicar watches were made to extremely high standards as many of them originally went to export to China where there were few watch making skills, so a watch needed to be durable, reliable and strong, so it would not required to be fixed. Stainless steel case and the back has the Enicar Saturn and leaping dolphin logo, with an individual serial number. The watch is a classic design with lovely contrasting features.  The watch is simple and to the point, with a robust movement. The dial and hands are clean and in superb condition. It has a day and date a the 3 position with an unusual feature as the day wheel is also numbered 1 to 7 beside the corresponding day if the week. It is a quickset date and set by advancing and regressing the hour hand at the midnight position. The corwn is original with the Saturn log and it is tight and functions perfectly without any slipping or looseness due to wear on the stems. The case is posihed steel and very retro in its shape. The dia and mand are in mint condition and are original and un restored. A stunning classic in great condition.  Comes on a replacement strap. Mint condition Dunhill hand wound wristwatch dating to around the late 1960’s. It is in the style of an Art Deco watch. The Dunhill watch is more of a connoisseurs watch as it is one of the brands associated with luxury goods and is now owned by the Reichmont Group.  The watch however is very strong in it’s own right and Dunhill are responsible for creating some very attractive and striking looking wristwatches.  This one is exactly that, it is the classily styled “tank” watch which was just about the standard shape in the 1930’s, plum in the era of Art Deco styling.  It is however slightly larger than the 1930’s watches, as it is made to slightly bigger and more modern proportions, with a hand wound Swiss made 17 jewel movement.  Has a very attractive faceted sapphire crystal giving a cut gemstone appearance.  It has a 9 karat gold case, angled case top and stunning looking very retro Art Deco style dial which is very clean and in good condition, with attractive blued steel hands and with Art Deco numbering and overall something that looks like it is pure Art Deco in form.  Very unusual and attractive and smart wristwatch.  Dimensions are: Width is 22 mm excluding crown and 24 mm including crown, Lug to lug is 38 mm, Thickness is 9 mm Ref. Excellent condition Le Jour automatic winding chronograph Le Jour were in operation in the 1960's through to the early 1980's and they specialised in economy priced versions of watches similar to Heuer and Porsche Design/Orfina offerings. This one is identical to the Heuer Pasadena reference 750.501. It is a slick and stylish looking watch which was originally jet black, however over they years the PVD coating has faded and looks somewhere in between gun metal and black. This faded look gives it a rather attractive and distinctive look about it.  This one dates from the late 1970’s to early 1980’s and is in a typical in the styling of sports chronographs with racing or military connections in this period. The case is large and heavy, it has a matching bracelet. The bracelet is not signed but it is believed to be original as it is the exact same type that was on the watch when they were new and it is also faded at the same rate as the rest of the case. The crystal is a mineral glass with some marks to it but nothing too serious given its age. The dial is mat black with aged tritium indices. Has a nice contrasting sweep central chronograph second hand and a day and date at the 3 position.  The crown and pushers also look original as they are the same faded colour as the rest of the case. It is a nice retro watch. It has got a Swiss made 25 jewel automatic Valjoux 7750 movement and the watch keeps good time and all functions work correctly. Some would call a poor man’s Heuer, but not so as this is an outstanding and excellent watch and good value for money vintage with a matchless engine in it.  It comes with the original box and original papers which is quite a rare find as these watches rarely appear at the best of times and one with the box and papers is even rarer. The width is 41 mm excluding crown, 43 mm including crown. The thickness is 14 mm and the lug to lug distance is 44 mm. Ref. VIN 563. sold

Mint condition and very rare Longines flagship automatic wristwatch in 18 karat gold with Longines caliber 345 Planetary Gear movement, and it comes in its original box. The Longines Watch Company was started in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz.  Agassiz opened a workshop in St Imier, Switzerland.  He operated what today would be called a "Home Business".  Workers would work on watches out of their own homes, which Agassiz would later sell. The company began producing chronographs in 1879.   They later produced aviator watches and cockpit instruments, they are still going very strong today and are owned by the largest Swiss watch making group, Swatch. The Longines flagship, as the name suggests, was the one time top of the range Longines watch.  It was well constructed, with excellent movement making it a no nonsense, no compromise, durable watch meant to last a lifetime and longer.  This one has a very attractive silver dial with an 18 karat gold case.  The dial has gold applied batons and gold hands with a gold sweep central second hand.  Has a large Longines winged logo and name "Longines" at the upper centre and the name "Flagship" and "automatic"  at the lower centre of the dial.  Has the original Longines signed winding crown with.  The case back which still has the original grain visible so has not been over polished during its life. The movement is the very rare and celebrated Longines claibre 340, or the Planetary Gear movement. In 1962 Longines was able to introduce its own flat automatic movement with a large rotor mounted slightly off center and coupled to the drive by an outer ring geared on the inside. This was an elaborate movement with high production costs so were less competitive and the firm was forced to bring out a considerably simpler movement (501) in 1965. The Longines calibre 340 series automatics were sometimes known as the "Grand Prize" movements, since Longines won the grand prize for the design in a Swiss watchmaker's convention when they introduced it, around 1959-1960. Unfortunately, Longines only produced it for about 5 years, since it was an expensive and labour intensive design to produce. It has an unusual rotor design: the rotor is positioned off center, and travels on a large planetary gear which accounts for its unusual ratcheting sound when the rotor is in travel. The movement is also beautifully finished, nothing showy, just a very high level of craftsmanship. The watch can be manually wound and it is the only automatic movement that I know of that fees and sounds like a manual winding watch when hand winding it. The watch ahs been well maintained and cared for as can be seen that it even retains the original box as it was a treasured possession for somebody. Dimensions are as follows. The width is 35 mm excluding crown, and 37 mm including the crown. The thickness is 10 mm and the lug to lug distance is 41 mm Ref: VIN 544. sold

One of the most important and prestigious American watch manufacturers was the Gruen Watch Company, founded by a brilliant father-and-son team of horologists, Dietrich and Fred Gruen. Among the first companies to sell wristwatches, the Gruens split their manufacturing between two continents, bringing German and Swiss traditions of craftsmanship to America. Dietrich was born in Osthofen, Germany, in 1847, and started his watchmaking career at age 15. In 1867 he went to America and settled near Columbus, Ohio. A hard-working young man, Dietrich was awarded his first watchmaking patent at age 27, in 1874. At 29 he co-founded the Columbus Watch Manufacturing Company; the successful enterprise was soon building complete watches in its own 300-employee factory buildings. In the 1920s and ’30s, rectangular watches were fashionable. Gruen was one of the first companies to design movements specifically for wristwatches; it made rectangular movements for rectangular watches, while most competitors still used small, round movements. Gruen’s movements were larger because they filled the available space, and the watches were sleeker because the case designs didn’t need to disguise a round movement. This was carried even further in the famous Gruen Curvex. Curved watches became popular in the 1930s, and Gruen’s Curvex movement curved to fit the watch; Gruen’s watches could be thinner and more curved than competitor’s watches with flat movements inside. This one is a lovely looking 10k gold filled Curvex in highly curved case with movement also on a slight curve as well. It has got long thin lugs which are steeply angled to give a highly curved profile. The crystal is acrylic and rather than curved on a lot of the Curvex watches, it is faceted with two sides to it split along the case profile from 9 to 6. The case and crystal are very Art Deco looking. The watch and movement are in excellent condition. The dial is silver with gold applied batons and hands with sub seconds at the 6 position. The movement is a Swiss made hand winding movement signed Gruen and Switzerland. It has the original Gruen signed winding crown and is clearly a watch that has been well looked after throughout its life. It comes on a Hirsch black leather replacement strap. Dimensions are as follows, width is 23 mm excluding crown, and 24 mm including crown, Lug to lug is 43 mm, Thickness is 11 mm. Ref: VIN 565.225 reserved

Forty five years service in a company is a lifetime and the owner was presented with this beautiful watch as a reward for loyal service. It is a small hand winding gold watch with beautiful sunburst dial. Tudor needs no introduction as it is the company started by Rolex to produce quality wristwatches without the price tag. Initially controlled and made by Rolex, but now a company in their own right. This watch is a wonderful example in mint condition inside and out. It dates to 1958 this is stated on the case back and it is also indicated on the papers that accompany the watch. The dial with its sunburst pattern is quite Art Deco looking. It has long selnder gold hands and gold applied numerals. The watch winds smoothly and is keeping good time. The presentation is beautiful and it comes in a small box that comes apart, signed Tudor by Rolex. Mint condition Glycine Airman “Old Airman” automatic winding pilot watch. Glycine is a small Swiss company formed in 1914 in Bienne Switzerland, by the distinguished and revered Meylan family, who have been associated with watch making for centuries, and have been responsible for many designs still in production or recognised today across a range of big band watch companies. Glycine carry on the Swiss tradition of craftsmanship, unique design and the highest quality precision timepieces. They are best known for the 24 hour Glycine Airman which was, first produced in 1953. They remain enthusiastic and at the forefront of unique and bold new designs. Glycine, with the Airman introduced a multiple time zone watch in 1953, These watches were meant to be for travelers and pilots that needed a watch that enabled them to read two different time zones. Purists will swear by the original vintage Airman model nicknamed the “Old Airman'” that was in production from 1953 till 1973. This model was embraced by the military chopper pilots during the Vietnam war with its useful second time zone and true 24 hour time reading. These first models had a Felsa caliber 692 movement and were succeeded in 1960 by an A. Schild movement. The movement is a 24 hour so the hour hand rotates the dial once every 24 hours, and the hour hands reads off the time off the 24 hour scale on the dial. The watch has got a rotating bezel which is secured by a screwed clamp at the 4 position. The bezel is rotated to show the time zone in another part of the world, so the time can be read with the hour hand off the bezel in a second time zone. Glycine still manufacture a version of this watch today which is about identical in every respect and known as the Airman “Purist Edition” The dial is in mint condition as is the case and crystal and the watch world like a dream. It was fully overhauled in 2007 at a cost of US $480 (£315) by established  watchmaker Werner Siegrist. This included new parts and a complete overhaul. Candino was founded in Switzerland in 1947 by Adolf Flury-Hug in Herbetswil. Things started to take off for them in 1971 when Candino inaugurates an assembly line for automatic watches and manufactures special electronic digital watches. The company employs 120 staff with premises in Biel and Herbetswil, Switzerland, not only supply the Swiss market, but export watches to over 65 countries worldwide. Key sale areas are Europe and the Middle and the Far East. All Candino watches are produced at the factory in Herbetswil, near Solothurn, at a rate of up to 2,000 quality watches per day. To strengthen the market presence and to profit from the synergies, Candino has been integrated into the Festina Group in January 2002. The Festina Group was founded 30 years ago by entrepreneur Miguel Rodríguez. The group's central head office is in Barcelona and there are subsidiaries in 9 countries. In 2006 Candino had the honour of timing Roger Federer's first victory in his home city, at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors in Basel. Candino are a strong brand today. This one however is an early 1970’s hand winding chronograph and one that is now regarded as 70’s retro cool. And for very good reason. It is an outstanding looking watch in mint original condition. It has hardly been worn and looks like it is only a year old condition wise. It has period styling to the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, with a case shape typical of this era. It comes on the original good quality solid link steel bracelet with signed folding clasp, which is an Oyster style bracelet. Unusually it has got screw in links, and at a period where companies were cutting costs, this one is made to the highest of standards including this bracelet, case finish, dial design and the movement. The case is solid stainless steel and very large for the age. It retains the original finish and has never been polished. It has a large push crown and a screw on case back. Pristine condition vintage Eternamatic 9 karat gold automatic wristwatch which was recently serviced. The 45 minute elapsed timer is at the 3 position and subsidiary seconds at the 9 position.  The movement is a Valjoux 7734.  Altogether very bright and colourful watch that is extremely well designed and thought out in terms of the dial markings and the modifications to the movement to create a specialist sports timing instrument. Outstanding watch and excellent value for money as this is a real collectors classic.. Vintage Regulator Hand Wound Wristwatch

B173 Pronto 3.jpg (51700 bytes)

B173 Pronto 2.jpg (56391 bytes)

Very unusual and good condition vintage hand wound regulator watch.  Regulators are not common watches and less often seen in vintage watches.  The regulator face is a striking and unusual watch, which is distinctive an unique looking.  The Regulator clock was originated in the 18th century by Louis Berthould.  He devised the regulator dial.  His idea was that the minute hand should be very dominant, with hours and seconds rotating within separate dials integrated into the watch face.  For the very first time this arrangement made the minute hand stand out at all times.  At the time it was a groundbreaking invention, but one which also took account of an emerging trend: people were becoming increasingly interested in measuring the smallest unites of time.  They sensed a growing urge to keep a precise, uniform track of time wherever they happened to be.  This assisted from industry, trade, communications, science, navigation as well as everyday schedules such as keeping to correct timetables for transportation.  The new dial was incorporated in pendulum clocks called regulators.  The regulator clocks became very precise and were used for determining official standards until the 1960’s when they were replaced by millisecond accurate atomic clocks.  The watch itself is hand wound.  It has the red central sweep second hand as the primary visual.  The two sub dials are the hour hand in the top sub dial and the minute hand in the lower sub dial.  The watch is made from stainless steel with an acrylic crystal.  The winding action is perfect, but when setting the time, the crown slips a bit and setting the time is easier turning the hands backwards as there is less slippage. Dimensions ar4e as follows, Width is 35 mm excluding the crown, 36 mm including the crown, lug to lug is 39 mm and thickness is 9 mm.  Ref VIN 522 sold

Memostar Wrist Alarm

B171 Memostar 2.jpg (130390 bytes)

B171 Memostar 3.jpg (110254 bytes)

Good condition Memostar hand wound wrist alarm. Memostar were prevalent in the 1970’s and this is a design that comes on a regular basis. It dates to around 1974 and this can clearly be seen though the 1970’s styling. This style went horribly out of fashion in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. However this retro 1970’s look has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity of late and its not difficult to see why. The case is typical of the period with its elongated shape, high sides and thick edges. The dial is also typical with sunburst feel especially with long indices. The alarm indicator hand is bright contrasting orange. The crowns are original. The top crown winds and sets the alarm and the bottom crown winds the watch and sets the hands. There is a date at the 3 position. Works well with loud alarm sounding on cue. The alarm is more of a buzz than a bell. The buzzing alarms are always much louder than the bell types. The movement is an AS 1931. AS were most famous for building wrist alarm movements. Dimensions are as follows. Width is 37 mm excluding the crown and 39 mm including crown. Lug to lug is 40 mm and the thickness is 9 mm Ref: VIN 512. sold

Very rare Kelek automatic chronograph with Lancia logo dial. Not much known on the history of the Lancia watch, but presumably a corporate gift for clients or racing teams, of for sale with Lancia cars. Kelek is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1896 and owned by Breitling. In addition to finishing and modifying Breitling's ETA/Valjoux/other base movements to high standards, Kelek develops in-house modules for them. Kelek was acquired by and is now been fully integrated with Breitling. This Kelek Lancia is a mint and new looking condition watch with a Calibre 11 automatic winding chronograph. The same movement used in many Breitlings, and Heuers. It is a handsome and strong watch with practical features, with vintage and very retro case shape. The dial is beautiful and a perfectly balanced combination of timekeeping and chronograph functions, keeping the un necessary clutter found on the "wannabe" watches to an absolute minimum. The dial is a two register chronograph, which is unusual to find in an automatic as most automatics have three sub registers. The winding crown is on the left of the case so it does not interfere with the chronograph functions. Date window at 6 position further adding to the fine dial balance. The sub seconds and chronograph hands are orange and contrast against the white sub dials which are unusually large. Has a black dial with white seconds track and blue tachometric scale making for an altogether very good looking colour scheme. All stainless steel solid and heavy case. Width is 40 mm excluding crown and 42 mm including crown, Lug to lug is 45 mm, Thickness is 14 mm. Ref: VIN 510. sold

Roamer began life in 1888 when a watchmaker named Fritz Meyer opened his own workshop to produce cylinder escapements in Switzerland. This one is indeed one of their famous Anfibio models which is rare as it is a white dial. Usually they were black dial models. Ordinarily a white dial would not make it so rare, but since this one is in fact one of the military issu watches, which normally have black dials, it is unusual in that it was a white dial. From adoing a little research it can be seen that it was issued to the Rhodesian Army. The Rhodesian Army found diffuiculty sourcing products due to world wide sanctions against Rhodesia in the mid to late 1970’s when they broke free of the British Empire and declared themselves independent under the leadership of Ian Smith without having free and fair elections. In addition to sourcing products, Rhodesia was forced into a civil war due to the actions of the independent government, and these watches were issued to the Rhodesian Army. This one appears to have been issued the a soldier in the elite Selous Scouts. The Selous Scouts were the Rhodesian elite force and were trained by the SAS. The watch was bought in a Hereford auction close to the base of the UK SAS headquarters, so it is possible that there is some connection there. There is an issue number on the back of the watch, 24154510, and the name “Pugh”. More research shows that a member of the Selous Scouts, which was a small unit was named Pugh. This can be seen here http://www.theselousscouts.com/ScoutsP.php With the auction in Hereford, the issue number and name, all information stacks up that this was owned by Pugh in the Selous Scouts. A rare collectors piece. Dimensions are 34 mm excluding crown, 36 including crown and 38 mm lug to lug and 15 mm thick. Ref: VMW 136. sold

Ollech & Wajs started business in the 1950s when Albert Wajs began making and supplying stainless steel bracelets for wristwatches. In 1956, a partnership was formed with Joseph Ollech, and they soon began manufacturing wristwatches. Business was done from their retail premises in Zurich. They soon began to expand into world wide markets, more notably the US and UK markets by advertising in magazines that were popular with aviators, soldiers, divers and sportsmen, selling direct to the end user by mail order from Switzerland. In the 1960s O&W sold a variety of professional automatic and manual-wind mechanical military and dive watches for an average of US $12. The Ollech & Wajs M 65 military watch was often sold at PX's on US military bases. These watches became very popular with US soldiers who bought them privately as a replacement for their government issued disposable watches.[1] Sales reached an all time high during the Vietnam War era when they were selling thousands of watches via direct mail order. Towards the late 1970s, Mr. Wajs bought up much of the Breitling company's stock for the aviation models such as the Navitimer. They began producing their own label watches using Breitling cases and the same calibre movements used in Breitling watches. These watches were branded “Aviation” and are now prized amongst collectors. During the first season of the 1970s British television series The Professionals, actors Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins wore what appear to be Ollech & Wajs Caribbean 1000 wristwatches. Another even rarer classic in mint condition. Bought as new old stock, but has been worn on the odd occasion.  The watch is from the 1960's but until recently has never seen the light of day before. Another cult classic from the cult manufacturer Ollech & Wajs. These are hard to find at the best of times as it was originally bought as new old stock.  It's a chrome plated case with stainless steel back with the slide rule bezel in acrylic, it is a lovely watch, very distinguishable, and a true classic. In most of the Ollech & Wajs styles, this one is typical as it is a navigators tuype watch, with slide rule bezel which is used to calculate flight plans. The rotating slide rule bezel is bi directional and non ratchet. Incabloc shock protected movement with a combination of numerals and baton hour markings, red second hand with date window at 3.
