Omega Speedmaster 125 Anniversary Chronometer
Excellent condition vintage and retro looking Omega Speedmaster 125 Anniversary Chronometer dating to 1973. To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Omega developed a very special commemorative watch that embodied the highest standards of craftsmanship in Omega watchmaking. This watch was the Speedmaster 125 limited to just 2,000 examples. The Speedmaster 125 was a leading edge watch in its day, becoming the very first automatic chronograph to be COSC certified as a chronometer. Other firsts for the ‘125’ included First automatic chronograph with calendar and First watch with a tempered mineral crystal (sapphire was not available in such a large size). It is very early 1970’s in looks and a style once went very unfashionable and is now back and seen as very cool. The Speedmaster 125 is honed from a huge steel billet, measuring 42mm excluding crown. The entire watch weighs is substantial and heavy in weight. The case is tonneau-shaped, with rounded top and bottom segments. The steel case is very thick: the main body is approximately 10mm thick at the center of its length, and about 12mm thick at the lugs. The bezel and caseback bring the overall thickness to 15mm. The bezel is actually separate from the case itself, and can be removed along with the movement as one piece. The caseback bears the embossed “Speedmaster” logo; there are no limited edition numbers showing on any 125 casebacks. The specially-designed and manufactured caliber 1041 movement introduced in the Speedmaster 125 was the very first automatic chronograph to be COSC-certified as a chronometer. The movement is a modified Lemania 5100 movement, one of the most robust automatic chronograph movements ever made. This is the later generation Omega Speedmaster, and the successor to the moon watch. The Speedmaster has gained legendary status which in attributed not only to it’s success in space as a professional instrument, but simply due to the fact that it is a beautiful looking watch, which is durable and practical, and can be worn on any occasion. This is whether travelling in outer space or worn with a tuxedo, or worn at a football match. The watch is large, strong and durable. The case is thick and substantial and typical of the era from which it hails, and a design that is becoming increasingly popular again – for very good reason, that many of the watches of the 70’s and early 80’s are now regarded as style icons by many watch enthusiasts and collectors alike. The functions include a quick set day and date at the 3 position, twelve hour chronograph with twelve hour elapsed timer at the 6 position, sixty minute elapsed timer at the 9 position, sixty minute elapsed timer is the T-bar central hand and the sixty second elapsed timer is the central sweep seconds chronograph hand. It also has a 24 hour representation of the current time at the 12 position with grey lower scale and black upper scale to indicate day and night.
