IWC "Aquatimer Chrono-Tribute to Calypso" Limited Edition of 2500
IWC Aquatimer Chrono-Tribute to Calypso which is a limited edition of 2500 pieces and this is number 1864. It was originally purchased from authorised IWC dealers Watches of Switzerland in Glasgow in 2010. This is a special limited edition of 2500 numbered pieces made in commemoration of the important ship Calypso that was used by the famous oceanographer, Jacque-Yves Cousteau.
This ship was actually a WWII British minesweeper and was de-commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1947. It was leased to J. Costeau who did extensive modifications to the ship that included a helicopter deck & carried many advanced diving equipment & mini submarines.
This ship was accidentally rammed by a barge on 8 Jan 1996 in the Singapore port and sank. Eight days later, it was raised and pumped dry but she was claimed by several parties after that and left to rot over the last decade. Restoration work has finally began in 2007. This watch was produced by IWC in October 2008 and proceeds were donated towards the restoration of this ship.
