IWC Big Pilot Automatic Wristwatch – IWC Serviced

Mint condition IWC Flieger Big Pilot watch IWC model reference number IW5004, originally purchased from Kenjo in New York in 2011, it was returned to IWC via Blowers in 2012 for a full service and comes with papers from IWC to support this. This is the second version Big Pilot with red accents in the power reserve. In 2002, the Big Pilot’s Watch became IWC’s flagship product. Its IWC manufactured 51111 calibre – one of the largest automatic movements in the world – contains all the features that have proved their worth in the long history of IWC mechanical watches. Within no time at all, the automatic movement generates a power reserve of 8.5 days, but only runs for seven before an ingenious little mechanism automatically stops it. This is because the torque that drives the movement decreases as the mainspring winds down, leading to a loss of amplitude in the balance and the unacceptable possibility of inaccuracy. Being know as the Big Pilot, as the name suggests, this is a large watch and designed to the original war time pilot size watches. They needed to be big for pilots to be able to see them instantly with high visibility when reading off cockpit instruments. It is a handsome durable and practical looking watch, with minimum of dial and design frills, it is just straight to the point and does it’s job exceptionally well.  It is one of the best looking IWC watches, and one of the most desirable of IWC’ watches and one of the best military or aviation style watches available – based on the enormously successful and influential war time models, it is a design classic and iconic wristwatch.  It is made to usual Swiss fanatically high standards and each IWC watch is hand finished, and made to the highest of standards, where attention to detail is of essence. The watch has got an Automatic Pellaton winding system, with power reserve display at the 3 position, and the watch has a seven day power reserve when fully wound, has a central sweep second hand with stopping mechanism for accurate time setting, a big date at the 6 position, scratch resistant convex sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on both sides and secured against displacement by drop in air pressure, The movement is surrounded by a soft iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. It is an IWC caliber 51111 movement Swiss made automatic with 42 jewels. The movement has a Glucydur beryllium alloy balance with high-precision adjustment cam on the balance bars and Breguet spring. The watch also features a large pilot style crown which is a screw down crown for security and water resistance, the resistance is 6 bar which is rated for low submergence in water (not tested).  It comes in box, all papers, stamped authorised dealer warranty card and outer box. It comes on black IWC strap with IWC deployant clasp. IWC were once a supplier to the German and British military forces. The RAF pilots wore this style watch, albeit smaller. The Luftwaffe wore the larger watches. The RAF and Luftwaffe issued watches are one of the most collectible of all military watches. It is a heavy watch weighing in at 147 grams. The dimensions are as follows: Width is 46 mm excluding crown and 52 mm including crown, lug to lug is 55 mm, Thickness is 16 mm.
