Smiths Hand Winding Motorcar Dashboard Clock
For a quality dashboard clock, you need to get a Heuer Master Time which costs around £2000. For a lesser quality clock and a bit of a novelty, you can have this Smiths for a meager £125. It’s an entry level clock which is best not to use in your vintage car, but ore to stick next to the desk.
It has a resin type plastic case, with large magnet mounted to the rear for sticking to a metal dashboard. It does stick well to metal drawers in an office or a filing cabinet or sorts as seen in one of the images. It is a strong magnet so stays in pace when stuck to metal.
Since it’s a dashboard clock the time setting and hand winding are by the stem at the 6 position. It needs to the taken off its mounting to be wound up. Its best to rotate the clock around so the stem is pointing upwards to wind up or set the time as can be fiddly if done in the 6 position.
It’s pretty old, from the 1960’s. Nice contrasting dial colour scheme with large hands and numerals for good legibility. It runs and keeps reasonable time. It’s one of the Smiths cheaper mechanisms so care is needed when winding as it could be over wound.
